September and the fall colors are right around the corner. Pretty soon we will up to our noses in pumpkin spiced this and apple cider that. And why wouldn’t that continue for the cocktails we drink? This month’s mix of the month from Mobile Cocktails ATL is an unique cocktail bridging old and new world ideas.
Our cocktail includes making a shrub. Shrubs were originated by pirates. Their rum would float if they didn’t fill the barrels with sea water. The sea water would ruin the taste… a bit, to avoid this they would add fruit to mask the saltiness. Today most scrubs use vinegar to achieve the flavor profile.
Our carrot shrub is 1 lb carrots, 1/2 cup sugar, 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar and 1 tbsp of grated ginger. Puree the peeled carrots, add the cider and ginger into a bowl that is covered for 3 days in the fridge, after 3 days strain the liquid using a cheese cloth and or mesh strainer and then stir in the until the sugar is dissolved.
One Shrub
1.5 oz gin
.5 oz fernet branca
1 oz shrub
.5 oz lemon juice
Shake all the ingredients and pour over large ice cube in a Collins glass, garnish with a rosemary sprig
