This week we will be doing 4 mixology classes. One for a bachelorette party, one for a 40th birthday party, one for a small company's employees and finally we did one last night for a small apartment complex. Their residents came down for a happy hour that was a lot greater than expected. We did a pop up mixology class and they learned how to make five different drinks in a two hour period. Two of the cocktails were classics and of the five cocktails, they all were tied together including two with champagne, three with fresh squeezed juices and to start things off right we did three drinks that were summer drinks. These first three were all light and refreshing and not overwhelming from a booze standpoint. Below are a couple pictures of the event. Does your attire really matter? Not if you aren't trying to impress anyone. Certainly going to the dog park offers a lot of flexibility in correct attire. But if you are meeting the boss, your girlfriend's parents or a new potential client, you want to be wearing the right attire. The same goes for glassware selection for drinks.
For years now we have all recognized the generic margarita glass that looks like a large wine glass was sat on by Santa Clause. Certainly we all recognize the pint glass and a rocks glass but there are so many other new glass types making their way onto our tables at the restaurant and into our homes. A Moscow Mule that comes in a rocks glass ain't cool Man....literally the classic copper mug will keep your drink colder. We are infusing several different alcohol batches for some of our customers. NO we don't sell alcohol despite the name of my company but we do doctor a few bottles from time to time. I have been asked to create a few for some of my clients and their upcoming Cinco de Mayo events as well as the Kentucky Derby.
At a recent event I was asked to pour a Captain Morgan and tonic with a lime. Ok I thought to myself as I prepared the drink. Before I said here you go the guest said, "a bunch of guys are going to order this, it is my father's favorite drink." During the next few hours I did pour a few dozen of these. That wasn't weird necessarily but what happened since then has got me thinking. A few times an event I may be asked to pour my favorite, or surprise me....yes, yes, all bartenders hate that. But...I always give it my best effort. I have poured this drink a few times and have had great response. Furthermore I have now had several occasions where someone else ordered this drink. I don't much like tonic but then it isn't my job to pour what I like. This is absolutely a pretty good drink.
So what were the popular drinks of 2013? Aside from beer, wine, champagne which I may get into in a separate post. For our many corporate events we created a great deal signature cocktails or even a menu with three or four drinks. The drink we suggested and was chosen the most was a champagne cocktail called the Chanendon Fizz. Four several parties this year we did an upscale martini menu. Many of those had some very exotic martini's on the list with some hard to source alcohols and mixers, but more often than not those same parties wanted something easy to drink and our Peach Martini did the trick. Of the margarita's we made this year our skinny margarita with agave nectar was certainly the biggest hit over say a Pomona, or Grand Texas Marg. The drink that was definitely the hit of the year in my book was our Dragon berry or Blackberry Mojito. The beer cocktail of the year was either a mule or a Black Velvet. Our non alcoholic drink was a play on a Bellini with blackberries. Now to be fair, the drink we poured the most of was certainly a Jack / Bourbon and Coke or Ginger, nothing changes here in the South! All of these recipes will be or already have been posted. One of the years I was blessed to be invited to another family's Christmas celebration I learned that you could make Bailey's Irish Cream. How funny it seemed that they made their own and each of the contributors changed their particular ingredient list up a little bit. Here what I find to be the most popular out there. I really see no reason to try to make this much healthier, admit what it is and enjoy! Ingredients
Instructions are very easy on this one. You combine all ingredients and blend on high for 30 seconds or until everything is properly incorporated. Bottle and chill. This will last for up to 60 days.
A Hot Toddy is a classic cold weather type of drink. There are several variations including the use of Gin, Rum, Whisky, Bourbon and even a virgin one using apple cider. Here's a classic recipe, I'd love to see your family's version.
1. Coat the bottom of a mug or an Irish coffee glass with honey.
2. Add the liquor and the juice of the lemon quarter.
3. On the side, heat water in a tea kettle and add the tea bag to make hot tea.
4. Pour the steaming tea into the glass and stir.
This is a cocktail my parents always had around the holidays and is still served at my favorite watering hole in Duluth Minnesota on Christmas Eve to all the regulars who stop in during the private party at the Green Mill.
1/2 oz simple
syrup or 1 tsp powdered sugar
1 oz dark rum
1 oz Cognac or brandy
Hot milk or hot water
Grated nutmeg for garnish
Separate the egg white from the egg yolk and beat them separately. Fold the beaten eggs together and place into an Irish coffee glass. Add the sugar or simple syrup, dark rum, and brandy. Fill with hot milk or hot water. Stir well. Garnish with nutmeg.
